Our ship was tied up next to this civilian vessel in the harbor in Barcelona, Spain when I took this photo in June 1974. This was one of the deep water harbors we visited in the Mediterranean where our ship could actually tie directly up to a pier. In other areas, we had to anchor a distance out into the harbor and use small boats to go back and forth to shore. These boats were either ones we brought along with us onboard the ship or civilian water taxis rented for our stay in port.

Note the size of the anchor on this ship compared to the suspended man painting depth lines on the ship’s side just below it. Judging by the amount of the ship’s side showing above the waterline, I suspect it was unloaded at the time.
